Its interesting how a chip making company is envisioning solutions for consumers using their core technology and packaging it in a product/ service.

Designboom shop sucks!

This is a sad story of my "History of Folding Chairs" poster which i've ordered from Designboom website. It made me extremely sad and then extremely angry with Designboom! I've bought it for more than 1000 INR ( which is a lot for two posters).The broken package which you can see in the picture is a good exaple of bad design coming from - Designboom!
I mean can't they have a better pack to save the inside poster? I don't think they can just blame it on postage/ transport, etc. since they better know how roughly things are handled when they come to India from Italy!!
I'm really disappointed with Designboom team! I mean, what is there in a poster if it gets crumpled exaclty at the centre. Some of the images and the text is also distroyed because of the folds!

Only a few days back when i heard the sad news of Prof. R.K.Joshi's demise, i was wondering what's happening in the Indian typography scene. And today i hear about the Typography Day 2008 at IDC, mumbai. The conference is scheduled to be on 28th & 29th of March 2008.

Among the Big names are Mahendra Patel (our own MCP), Vikas Satwalekar and Achyut Palav.I really wish to attend !

We had gone to a local exhibition of "Ghar Sansar". They have all cheap stuff for your home from dustbins to cutlery. Locally made - mostly copied products from big Brands. At one counter i got a very interesting toy ! I saw it from a distance and i knew what it was! It was a Toy Designed by Chuck Hoberman- the inventor of Hoberman's Sphere- another great toy which i'm wanting since i knew about it! This toy is called "Switch Kick". As you can see, it looks like a ball with cuts in between. Actually, its a brilliant assembly of structural links with a tetrahedron like basic geometry. This is fine till this point. But when you throw it up in the air, it twists and the inside links comes on the outside and vise versa! It dose an amazing " inside- out" ! The images will explain the mechanism. Guess the cost ! > 40 Rupees !! :-)
Well, there are slight differences between this one and the original one! Probably made to reduce cost while copying !

Last month i've been to Dusseldorf, Germany for Medica '07.
The first transport we used from Frankfurt airport to Koln was the ICE ,Deutsche Bahn(German Railways). The first thing ( after the good looking train) struck me was the beautiful typography they've used throughout. The signage, the timetable on the platform, the pamphlet, everywhere a coherent typography was used.
I am a great fan of Erik spiekermann, the German type designer of famous typefaces like ICT officina, FF meta, etc. I was wondering who has designed the typo for DB. Today, while stumbling for type designers, i found out the answer. The DB typo is done by none other than the Erik spiekermann along with Christian Schwartz and Tal Leming.

With Ambient the physical environment becomes an interface to digital information
rendered as subtle changes in form, movement, sound, color or light.
Current information interfaces are either interruptive or too detailed.
For the first time in history, ubiquitous wireless networks can affordably deliver digital information anytime, anywhere. The result for most of us is cacophony. Ambient wants to make the world calmer. Some information requires constant awareness.
For some it's the status of their portfolio, or the health of an aging parent. Others want to know if their friends are online, the upcoming weather, the score of a game, if the fish are biting, or if there's heavy traffic on their drive home. These are examples of information that is neither worthy of interrupt (push), nor worthy of investing time (pull). This type of information should be glanceable, like a clock or barometer. We call this ambient information, and we've created the technology to deliver it.

'The Music Lesson'

This painting, often referred to as 'The Music Lesson', was created by the great Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer in the 1660s. Vermeer (1632-75) only produced about 30 paintings during his lifetime. He really seems to have worked rather slowly. When he died, his wife and family were left in debt. Two paintings went to the local baker to settle a bill. But since about 100 years ago, his work started to be re-assessed, and today he is regarded as one of the greatest artists that ever lived.
Very little is known about Vermeer's life, and his methods of working. He had no students or apprentices, and he left no records. But many people have speculated that he might have used some sort of optical device to help him create his paintings, possibly a device called a Camera obscura, the forerunner of the modern camera. Literally 'darkened room' a Camera obscura is a box which has a lens at the front. A portable Camera obscura can have a ground glass screen onto which the image from the lens is thrown. Or a Camera obscura can be big enough for the observer to be inside it.
These speculations about Vermeer's possible use of a Camera obscura are based on general observations about his paintings. But recent work by Professor Philip Steadman, of the Open University in England, has thrown new light on this issue. Read the rest of the story here

Grand Illusions : Snail ball

A small, metallic gold ball just over 2cm in diameter. Place it on the plastic channel which should be slightly sloping, and you would expect it to roll down in the normal way. Well, this ball does roll, but it does so incredibly slowly. To an audience, it seems baffling why it should roll down a slope apparently in slow motion. You can pick the ball up, and it seems heavy, possibly solid. No clues if you shake it.

3. The Fake Coin
You have twelve coins. You know that one is fake. The only thing that distinguishes the fake coin from the real coins is that its weight is imperceptibly different. You have a perfectly balanced scale. The scale only tells you which side weighs more than the other side.
What is the smallest number of times you must use the scale in order to always find the fake coin?
Use only the twelve coins themselves and no others, no other weights, no cutting coins, no pencil marks on the scale. etc.
These are modern coins, so the fake coin is not necessarily lighter.
Presume the worst case scenario, and don't hope that you will pick the right coin on the first attempt.

Perpetual motion machine proposals are often dismissed by scientists in a manner that appears to the layperson as hasty rejection using dogmatic assertions that such machines are prohibited from working by the "laws of thermodynamics". This does not satisfy the person who knows a little physics, but considers the laws of thermodynamics a bit mysterious. The very character of such laws is off-putting to the average person, because they have an air of finality and negativity.

This "overbalanced wheel" idea reappeared in an astounding variety of forms over the centuries. We show a better diagram from a later time. A system of pegs or stops was required to hold the hammers at a large distance from the axle after they flipped over the top and allow them to hang freely as they came around the other side. Perhaps the rationale was that the balls had more moment (of inertia) on one side due to the larger lever arms (even though the principles of torque hadn't yet been formalized at this time).

It was invented by a Japanese architecture professor, Masahiro Chatani, in 1980. The first origami architecture card he designed was a New Year card for his friends. Google Earth (GE) is the free application released by Google as a beta/test product in June of this year. The Windows version is no longer beta as of 10-Jan-2006. The beta for Mac was released also on 10-Jan-2006. GE is based on a product called "Keyhole" which Google acquired when they purchased the company Keyhole in 2004. Google describes it briefly as:
"Google Earth puts a planet's worth of imagery and other geographic information right on your desktop."
Google released the product first for recent versions of Microsoft Windows XP or 2000 (there is a beta version for the Mac and reports they are working on a Linux version). You will need a decent computer with a 3D graphics card, and will find a broadband connection is best. If you have these things, you will find Google Earth one of the most amazing applications you have ever used.

Whenever the weather change the landscape transforms, the light becomes different and the whole atmosphere changes. All materials seem to alter. In my project I explore the possibilities for hidden design appearing as the environment changes. I applied techniques to enduring and solid materials as glass and concrete, so that natural processes like differences in temperature causing condense reveal patterns on windows. Rain uncovers decoration on a city square. The possible applications of solid poetry are various: either at home in the bathroom, in the garden, in saunas and dance clubs, where the humidity is high or public spaces like bus stops or pavements. All forms of solid poetry have in common that they change the whole setting; they are surprising and have a life of their own.

'Raju & I' wins prize at Italian animation fest - News from Animation Express

Raju & I bags National award
No dubt that bagging awards must have become a routine thing for Animagic, but this is big. The National awards were announced on wendnesday and Raju & I has won in the animation category.

What next Animagic?

Looking forward to posting pics of Chetan and Gayatri with the president of India.

Directed by Gayatri Rao, commissioned and distributed by childrens charitable trust ASEEMA, the 30 minute short film was made on a shoestring budget of US$50,000. The animation being mostly hand drawn, the film was two years in the making.

When contacted, Animagic India spokesperson Romel Dias said that "'Raju & I' is aimed at creating an awareness about social conditions and deals with issues faced by underprivileged children, as seen from the eyes of a 12-year-old city boy."

a close friend of mine Shailja Jain has done the backgrounds for the film.
